SheTrades Global

Overview

The SheTrades initiative at the International Trade Centre (ITC) has changed the economic lives of three million women in 30 countries by connecting them to markets. We have opened 12 regional hubs across Africa, Asia, South America, the Caribbean and Europe, and we continue to grow.

The initiative centres on empowering women engaging in international trade and creating a women-inclusive fairer business ecosystem. We help them overcome barriers and, with them, identify areas that urgently need to be addressed.

Our flagship event, SheTrades Global, brings together women entrepreneurs from all these regions. For women whose businesses are ready to export, they have a unique chance to connect meet potential buyers, investors and partners.

Previous editions of SheTrades Global — held in Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, Türkiye, Brazil, Rwanda, Mexico, and China — included representatives from over 85 countries and generated over $80 million of new business for women entrepreneurs.

Participation is free.

Unfortunately, after careful consideration of events over the past two years, as well as consultation with beneficiaries and stakeholders, ITC decided to cancel the 8th edition of SheTrades Global.

The SheTrades Initiative, and our partners in this endeavor, remain fully committed to continuing to create opportunities for women to trade across our collective, global portfolio. Please refer to SheTrades.com for information on our numerous opportunities and events, and for updates.

As the African Continental Free Trade Area prepared to begin, the conference heard how the common market needs to deliver for women.

The conference was featured at the 2018 International Business Festival, a major global festival of trade and investment held every two years in Liverpool. The Festival attracted industry leaders, international delegations and companies from across the world looking to expand their trade footprint.
This year will highlight four sectors – beauty and wellness; IT and business-process outsourcing; textiles and apparel; and tourism.

Impact areas

Sustainable resilient value chains

Connecting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to value chains and helping them succeed is central to ITC’s mission. We work with all stakeholders in areas that can improve income and employment and have the greatest potential for developmental change, and develop strategies and build partnerships along those value chains. See how our Alliances for Action and Trade for Sustainable Development initiatives support these objectives.

Inclusive trade

We understand that inclusion is essential to bridge economic, social and environmental gaps. ITC emphasizes initiatives that create opportunities for women, youth and other people in vulnerable situations, such as the poor, refugees, internally displaced persons, people with disabilities and other often marginalized groups. See how our SheTrades, Youth and Trade, Ethical Fashion Initiative and Refugee Employment and Skills initiatives work towards these objectives.

Green Trade

Environmental sustainability and climate resilience have become key determinants of enterprise competitiveness. ITC supports ecopreneurs and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to build and scale their green innovations and products. We promote the alignment of trade- and environment-related policies. See how our Green2Compete and Trade for Sustainable Development initiatives aim to end unsustainable practices.

E-commerce

ITC centres its efforts on the digitalization of trade and the specific constraints faced by micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular e-commerce of goods and services. We focus on facilitating inclusive participation in e-commerce by simultaneously enabling firm growth and addressing challenges faced at the enterprise, business ecosystem and policy levels. See how our ecomConnect initiative helps provide tools and solutions for the development of e-commerce.

Regional integration

ITC’s interventions at the regional and inter-regional level focus on boosting regional trade and advancing South-South trade and investment. We enhance supportive regulatory and institutional environments, and strive to integrate micro, small and medium-sized enterprises into regional value chains and connect them with emerging trade opportunities. See how our One Trade Africa empowers African enterprises, especially women- and youth-led businesses, to access market opportunities from continental integration.

Goal

Business

We strive to create more supportive business ecosystems by providing such services as information, training, legal and financial advice, marketing and advocacy. ITC also works with networks of business support organizations (BSOs) to develop joint strategies to benefit the ecosystem as a whole as well as the individuals working within.

Goal

ITC will support 1,200 BSOs to improve their operations in 2022-2025, depending on funding.

We work with government institutions and other stakeholders to craft inclusive, country-owned trade and investment strategies, monitor the implementation of strategies and make policy and regulatory frameworks more conducive for business development. We support trade and investment regimes that reduce compliance costs for MSMEs, and work to mainstream inclusion and environmental sustainability in our public-private dialogues and strategy solutions. Read more about related topic Trade development strategies.

Goal

We provide continuously improved business trade and market intelligence. Our public goods promote transparency and advocate for best practices. They facilitate access to information on trade dynamics, market access conditions, growth potential and policy choices, and possible business partners. We help stakeholders translate information into actionable intelligence, and aim to increase the user-friendliness of our public goods and expand cooperation with other organizations to enhance data collection, dissemination and related activities.

What is the SheTrades Initiative?

Our SheTrades Initiative has changed the economic lives of three million women in 30 countries by connecting them to markets.

Consultations with global thought leaders reveal persisting barriers between key actors and the building blocks of women’s enterprise development: gender-disaggregated research, inclusive policy, skills development, access to markets and finance.

SheTrades works across countries, regions and stakeholders to champion quality data on women’s participation in trade. We work with policymakers to level the playing field for women, leverage partnerships with the public and private sectors, and connect women to markets and learning opportunities through our one-stop online platform, SheTrades.com.

The Initiative is a proud contributor to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SheTrades Morocco helps business women boost their export capacity in the processed foods sector by producing value-added products in line with market requirements, and linking them with targeted buyers through networking and business linkage events.

We provide key information on quality control and management, conditioning, packaging, labeling, pricing, as well as improved business management and marketing skills.

Twenty-five selected Moroccan women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) will also learn to design and implement new marketing strategies to effectively position their products in local, regional and international markets.

As a result, the project will promote gender equality, improve community livelihoods and help women-owned SMEs to benefit from higher incomes, as well as strengthen and grow their businesses.

Enhancing capacity of support institutions

The project also aims to reinforce Morocco’s Investment and Trade Agency (AMDIE), the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Morocco (AFEM), the National Federation of Agribusiness (FENAGRI) and the Moroccan Association of Exporters (ASMEX).

These institutions will be able to upgrade their technical skills and know-how to provide better, effective and efficient business services to Moroccan small women-owned businesses along the value chain requirements, including help in accessing finance, and business generation.

Through e-learning, classroom, and peer-to-peer learning, SheTrades Morocco will increase the capacity of these institutions to identify challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, specific steps they can take to build the competitiveness of women entrepreneurs, and to measure results of their activities.

Women economic empowerment in the handicraft sector.

The International Trade Centre’s flagship initiative on women and trade, SheTrades, has launched a new chapter in Egypt to empower and boost the competitiveness of women-owned micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the handicraft sector.

The project’s overarching objective is women’s economic empowerment as part of the country’s inclusive and sustainable development and economic growth.

The project will provide women-led small businesses with trainings on production, packaging, logistics, trade information, quality management, and sector-specific marketing and sales.

Fifty targeted women-owned small businesses will benefit from adopting best export practices and connecting with export markets and buyers, translating into increased resources and growth of their businesses.

Assisting trade support institutions to enhance services to women

Shutterstock

To ensure strong support for women entrepreneurs entering new markets, the project will also provide advisory services, trainings and technical guidance to the Export Development Authority of Egypt and selected trade support institutions to establish more effective trade institutional frameworks for women-owned businesses.

SheTrades Egypt will:

  • Train trade support institutions on gender and how to mainstream gender in their institutions
  • Help institutions understand the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs and how to build up their capacity to trade
  • Provide support on trade information services, market development and quality management
  • Advise buyers on how to better engage with women entrepreneurs, providing online and offline training, best practices and helping them commit to sourcing goods and services from participating women entrepreneurs
  • Support select trade institutions who take a lead role in mobilizing buyers and ensure effective business-to-business links

Statistics show that only 1/5 Egyptian companies in the handicraft sector are women-owned exporters. ITFC is therefore very proud to support the She Trades Egypt project.
