Paraguay’s ambassador on visit to ITC

Non-tariff measures on the agenda during visit of Paraguay’s ambassador to the UN.

Senior members of the International Trade Centre’s management team lead by Executive Director Ms Patricia Francis on Monday (3 December) received HE Mr Juan Esteban Aguirre, Paraguay’s Ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva.

At the meeting at ITC’s headquarters, the two sides discussed the next steps of an on-going ITC survey of non-tariff measures (NTMs) in Paraguay. The first stages of the NTM survey has already been carried out and the next step will include a public-private stakeholder meeting.

Mr Aguirre, who took up is his current post in September, was previously the Deputy Minister of Paraguay for Foreign Affairs, a position he held from 2011. From 2010 to 2011 he was the Director General of Multilateral Policy at the Ministry of External Relations. Before that Mr Aguirre served for eight years as Paraguay’s ambassador to Canada between 2001 and 2009, where he served as Paraguay’s Ambassador to that country. He has also served as Ambassador to the United States and to Brazil, and, in 2000-2001, was Paraguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Aguirre also spent time working for the United Nations and in 1994-1999 he held the consecutive posts of representative of the United Nations for the population with the Governments of Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela; and as representative of the United Nations for the population with the Government of Guatemala.
