On 26 January 2022, the Youth Alliance for Leadership and Development in Africa (YALDA) in collaboration with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim Bank), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced the winners of the joint AfCFTA Youth Creative Competition.

Addressing “The African Continental Free Trade Area: What is in it for young Africans?”, the competition featured three categories (essays, infographics, and animation) for which youth could submit their creative ideas.

The competition received 477 entries from 36 countries across all African regions and the diaspora. The winners in each category were:

  1. Boluwatife Aderounmu – Animation
  2. Oyedele Philemon Oluwakoyejo – Infographics
  3. Terrance Mawanga – Essays

Each winner receives $1000 next to other tailored prizes.

The AfCFTA Youth Creative Competition seeks to break information asymmetry among youth on the AfCFTA. It promotes a bottom-up approach to the Free Trade Area’s policy formulation and implementation by harnessing innovative, youth-driven solutions that will contribute to active youth engagement in the AfCFTA.

ITC supported the competition by promoting it through respective networks and channels, such as the Ye! community and project countries, as well as curating and evaluating the submissions.
