Greater Farmer Participation in Uganda's Coffee Value Chain Brings Benefits
This project (NTF II Uganda) has contributed to the ‘farmer ownership model’ implementation among the small scale farmers in Uganda.
By developing market linkages, improving farmers' knowledge and skills in export marketing, and certification and verification, more coffee producers have been encouraged to participate in high-end nodes of the value chain at export levels attracting an average of $2.30 per kilogram. Farmers have exported more than 14,000 bags worth over $2.5 million to Europe through farmers’ associations. The farmers’ position in the value chain is reinforced.
Support through NTF II strengthened business relationships at the AFCA conference and exhibition in Arusha in 2011 and in February 2012 in Addis Ababa, as well as at SCAE in Vienna. Market linkages have been made in Italy, China, Japan, Canada, Belgium and the U.S. The market base has also been expanded to include domestic and international markets, with more than 15 buyers in the specialty market segment.
