Food Safety in World Trade seminar for Peruvian TSIs

On 16 April, ITC launched the quality related component of the project Export development in Peru’s northern corridor (“Región Exportadora”), funded by SECO.

The component aims to strengthen the capacity of Trade Related Institution(s) (TSI), such as Promperu, in the Northern corridor of Peru to assist SMEs understand and implement food safety systems based on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP). The programme (April-December 2012) will coach ten Trainer-cum-Counsellors (TcCs) using ITC Methodology and Training Pack on HACCP and build awareness of food safety pre-requisites and HACCP in ten selected enterprises from the agro and agro-processing sector based in Chiclayo and Piura.

Through the network activation of the TcCs and the anchorage of the training programme within the TSI, the TcCs will be able to share their experience and knowledge to train and assist additional SMEs in implementing HACCP after the completion of the project.

The half-day seminar on building awareness on Food Safety in World Trade held on 16 April in Chiclayo was first in a series of food safety workshops that will be held under the project in April, August, October and December. The overall objective is to raise awareness of the food industry in the region on the need for food safety and its implications for international trade. The seminar was well received and appreciated by more than 70 participants.
