Bangladesh readies itself for global business
‘Bangladesh has positioned itself as a prime location through enhancing its capability and skill availability, lower costs of operations, and by making targeted investments into telecom and IT infrastructure.’
That was one of the key messages delivered by Mr Anders Aeroe, Director of the International Trade Centre’s (ITC) Division of Market Development, at ‘Positioning Bangladesh: Branding for Business’ held in Dhaka on 4-6 December.
Delivering his keynote speech at the opening of the conference, Mr Aeroe put focus on why Bangladesh has managed to position itself as sourcing destination for IT services and how ITC, through the Netherland’s Trust Fund project (NTF), has been able to be part of the country’s IT and ITES success.
He said that NTF II, which is funded by the Dutch government, “focuses on strengthening Bangladesh IT sector links with targeted European markets. In a nutshell, the project assists Bangladesh in building a stronger image and helps brand it as an attractive outsourcing destination.”
‘Since the NTF II project was initiated, the Bangladeshi IT and ITES sector overall has increased its exports, and many of the beneficiaries of NTF II have succeeded in renewing their contracts with their counterparts in Europe,’ Mr Aeroe said.
Apart from Mr Aeroe and other senior ITC staff, the ‘Positioning Bangladesh : Branding for Business’ conference in Dhaka, also attracted major stakeholders from both the public and private sector, including the Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Mr Aeroe said that, while much has been achieved in Bangladesh, ‘there is much more to achieve and ITC looks forward to being a part of this growing success story that is Brand Bangladesh’.
‘Positioning Bangladesh : Branding for Business’ was organized by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Business Initiative Leading Development, Katalyst, and the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services, in cooperation with ITC and the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries.
