    The International Trade Centre (ITC) and partners showcased how to make data and digitalization work for small business and trade development at eCommerce Week 2022, from 25-29 April. The event was organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in partnership with the eTrade for All initiative.

    Organized by ITC, CUTS International, and Diplo Foundation. ITC speaker: Quan Zhao, Trade Policy Officer

    Capacity building for policy discussions on data flows is at the centre of this discussion for developing countries. The session will identify concrete actions including to improve development-oriented research on data flows; develop national data-related strategies and regulatory frameworks; and promote a holistic approach to data governance that includes non-trade related issues such as data protection and intellectual property.

    How can the digitalization of supply chains contribute to a more inclusive, fairer, and transparent trade in the coffee sector? The session showcases the digital traceability systems of Farmer Connect and OLAM International that were implemented in a pilot activity with small businesses under an ITC SheTrades project in Rwanda.

    The main findings of the eTrade Readiness Assessment (eT Ready) of Tunisia will be presented and the challenges of digital transformation in the country explored. Panellists will share their vision and ongoing efforts for leveraging e-commerce in Tunisia, based on the Plan of Action to operationalize key recommendations of the assessment.

    Amid global discussions on the governance of international data flows, consultations and surveys with the African private sector indicate emerging concerns regarding the impact of individual country policies on firms’ ability to engage in cross-border e-commerce. This session will explore how data could be treated in the digital trade instrument of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Special focus: addressing challenges of agri-tech start-ups.

    How do micro and small enterprises adopt digital technologies? This session considers new evidence from the field and evaluates this question using two models - the capacity model and the environmental model. Small businesses that are ‘digitalized’ will also be explored. What kind of data do they use to launch and then manage their online presence? What works and what doesn’t when it comes to the use of data, successful adoption of digital by MSEs and e-commerce practices?
