The Netherlands funds two-year project to enhance export opportunities for Uganda

Enhancing the export competitiveness of the Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled services industry will lead to the development of a vibrant, sustainable sector that will open up job opportunities for women and youth, said a senior official of the International Trade Centre (ITC)

Speaking at the launch of the USD 1 million Netherlands Trust Fund (NTF) III project on IT and ITES sector in Kampala, Uganda, on 5 February 2015, Mr Anders Aeroe, Director of Market Development at ITC, he expressed hope that this initiative would lead to strong market links and a diversified export market for these services.

‘First, a National Export Strategy will be drawn up through a consultative process for the IT and ITES sector to provide a road map for the development and expansion into regional and international markets,’ said Mr Aeroe. ‘Under this project, a selected pool of small and medium-sized enterprises involved in IT and ITES will receive assistance in improving their business prospects and marketing knowledge, as well as to identify investment opportunities. They will also benefit from business-to-business matchmaking events within regional markets and also in Europe in segments such as mobile, web and image processing.’

The NTF III project managed by the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) will benefit 30 IT and ITES companies in Uganda which are small and medium-sized enterprises. The project will be executed in collaboration with the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda, Uganda Business Process Outsourcing Association and the ICT Association of Uganda.
