Global Services Network enhances innovation and value addition in services for trade development

An e-network developed by the International Trade Centre (ITC), which connects trade in services stakeholders around the world, was launched in Beijing on 28 May 2014 at the China National Convention Centre. The ITC Global Services Network (LINK: http://www.intracen.org/itc/global-services-network/) disseminates vital trade in services intelligence to keep smaller fledging services business groups in developing countries informed. The e-network also offers opportunities for the sharing of best practices with other more established services industry champions in other countries. The e-network was showcased in partnership with the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) at an event titled, ‘Reinforcing Sci-Tech Services Strength: Realizing the Chinese Dream’.

The event was staged in conjunction with the third annual China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) aimed at reinforcing and supporting the efforts of developing countries to innovate for export competitiveness in the information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services sectors.

CIFTIS is the world’s first comprehensive platform specializing in the trade in services. The event which is on until 1 June, is hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality.

ITC is co-hosting the Sci-Tech Services Pavilion at CIFTIS in partnership with the China High-Tech Industrialization Association (CHIA). The Pavilion showcases the capacity of Chinese and international companies in offering a range of advanced IT and IT-enabled services in sectors such as energy, environment, logistics, aerospace, satellite technology, big data and cloud computing, mobile medical services, and intelligent urban infrastructure services including smart water distribution and traffic control systems. The emphasis is on innovation and value-added services.

ITC and the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) will jointly deliver the China Satellite Services Conference and Business Matching Event on 29 May titled, “A New Space-based Silk Road”.

This event, which is the first satellite services business matching event to take place at CIFTIS, will focus on the global service policy, capacity and collaboration vision of Chinese satellites. It will also address the issue of satellite data exchange and market demand information in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America. Market development of the modes of global satellite services will also be discussed, as well as financial support services.

Services is the fastest-growing sector of the global economy, accounting for about 70% of the world’s gross domestic product, providing a third of global employment, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The ITC delegation was led by the Chief of Sector Competitiveness, Robert Skidmore, and Trade in Services Senior Adviser, Jane Drake-Brockman.
