(Geneva/Jakarta) – The International Trade Centre (ITC) and Unilever are holding a virtual launch event today to celebrate their partnership to increase gender-responsive procurement and advance women’s economic empowerment in Indonesia.

The launch event will convene high-level representatives from government, leading corporations, and women-owned businesses to discuss bottlenecks to women’s participation in the economy and to promote public-private partnerships that can advance solutions.

Attendees will gain an overview of the partnership’s goals and upcoming activities, which will be implemented through ITC’s SheTrades Initiative in collaboration with the Womanpreneur Community. The event will also explain how businesses owned and led by women can apply to become Unilever suppliers.

Under the partnership, the businesses will also have the opportunity to increase their competitiveness by attending technical training sessions on sustainable and ethical business planning, and on financial readiness.

In addition to aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the partnership will also advance ITC and Unilever's commitment to sustainable and inclusive economic recovery.

Nurdiana Darus, Corporate Secretary and Head of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, Unilever Indonesia explained, ‘One of the pillars in ‘The Unilever Compass’ strategy is to contribute to a fairer and more inclusive society. We do this through various initiatives, which includes helping to improve the standards of living of all parties in our value chain, including our suppliers. One of Unilever's commitments is to ensure that at least €2 billion is allocated annually to grow a business ecosystem that represents diversity and inclusiveness in our supply chain.’

Anna Mori, SheTrades-Unilever Partnership Manager, International Trade Centre, commented, ‘Indonesia is a priority country for both Unilever and SheTrades, with a large number of active women entrepreneurs. Micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) contribute to 57% of the country’s GDP, with over 50% of MSMEs being owned by women. Expanding economic opportunities for women-owned and led businesses through procurement can expedite post-pandemic recovery and yield great benefits for the economy. “Today’s panel will provide a multi-stakeholder perspective of the barriers that prevent gender inclusive procurement. Our collaboration with Unilever can unlock the potential of women-owned and led businesses so that their businesses can thrive while contributing to a stronger, fairer Indonesia in the future.’
