After more than 11 years of negotiations Tajikistan on 2 March became the 159th member of the WTO.

The International Trade Centre (ITC) and The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) have congratulated the Republic of Tajikistan on its official accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and reaffirmed their commitment for continued support to the country in its post-accession period.

Throughout the WTO accession, ITC, in conjunction with SECO, has worked with the Republic of Tajikistan by providing trade-related technical assistance aimed at supporting Tajikistan in WTO accession and improving competitiveness of the key sectors of the Tajik economy such as agri-processing and textile and clothing.

Continued assistance

In the years to come ITC will continue its assistance to Tajikistan in the implementation of WTO provisions and other issues regarding the post-accession process, building on a series of activities implemented through the Trade Cooperation Programme for Tajikistan, funded by the Swiss Government.

The overall objective of the programme is to build the confidence of all stakeholders, particularly the private sector, in the WTO membership, preparing the business community to reap the benefits and smoothly adjust to the post-WTO accession environment. Implications for suppliers, users and regulators of other key services such as telecommunications, transport and energy stemming from the WTO accession process will also be addressed.
