ITC workshop looks at how to improve packaging of mangoes and cut costs.

Senegalese mango producers and exporters learnt about European Union packaging standards during a recent two-day workshop in Dakar, hosted by the International Trade Centre (ITC). The training was based on diagnostic study held in June, and looked at packaging and accessories for the packaging of fresh mango. The training session was held concurrently with the Agribusiness Forum, which allowed attendees to participate in conferences and business-to-business meetings as well.

The workshop, held on 27-28 November, which attracted participants from a local packaging company, cooperatives and the Senegalese government, included sessions on corrugated boxes for fresh mangoes and packaging for both fresh and processed — or value-added — mango products. Topics such as the functioning of the packaging supply chain, establishing packaging specifications, types of boxes and best practices and standards were also discussed.

A half-day session on “Teaming up for cost optimisation” prompted a debate about the need for standards, specifications and joint procurement by cooperatives, so that they can take advantage of minimum-order quantities. During a session led by ITC's lead consultant, it became clear that there is a need for standard specifications and joint procurement of packaging, so that the price and delivery time from harvest to market can be reduced.
