Coffee-strategy update provides deeper analysis of Uganda’s coffee sector and action plan for producers and exporters.

Amelia Kyambadde, Uganda's Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, on 10 June presented the working draft update of the National Export Strategy Coffee Sector, which forms part of the Netherlands Trust Fund II (NTF II) programme for Uganda. Coffee was selected as the main component of the programme because it is the country's top export and more than 500,000 families are dependent on the commodity.

Action plan

The strategy update contains analysis of the main players in Uganda’s coffee industry, and the challenges facing the sector. It also offers potential solutions and an action plan for the way ahead for producers and exporters. The draft, drawn up following a consultative process that involved stakeholders from public and private sectors, as well as civil society, was supported by technical assistance from the International Trade Centre.

More than 100 representatives from all levels of Uganda’s coffee industry attended the event at the Africana Hotel in Kampala where they also had the opportunity to showcase their work and products.

Ms Kyambadde presented the keynote address and symbolically cut a ribbon to officially launch the strategy. Participants also heard speeches by representatives from the main participating institutions, including the Netherlands’ Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority, the National Union of Coffee Agribusinesses and Farm Enterprises, the Uganda Export Promotion Board and ITC.
