This module gives an overview of the
legal and customs requirements that African enterprises may face when trading
with other African markets. It offers practical solutions to ensure that businesses
can export in compliance with the regulations of their chosen export market(s),
avoiding the consequences of getting things wrong – including possible delays
for goods, added costs and possible reputational damage. The module gives
practical advice on how to navigate the rules of the AfCFTA and other regional
trade agreements, helping exporters to benefit from the tariff reductions they
may offer. It provides guidance on the implications that differing documentary
requirements and tariff rules may have on enterprises’ export strategy, with examples
of correct documentation, as well as information on how and where to find
information on standards and certifications that may be required. Finally, it
provides a thorough overview of the Rules of Origin requirements to benefit
from reduced tariffs within the context of free trade agreements.

developing an export market. It begins with an overview of the fundamentals of
export market research, including how to analyse trade statistics, interpret
trade indicators, identify tariff and non-tariff measures and access the
benefits offered by the AfCFTA. It then moves on to look at how to select an
export market entry strategy, as well as a sales and marketing strategy, which
may include participation in trade fairs and conducting in-market visits.

After having completed this course, participants will be able
to:

Conduct a trade flow analysis of African markets;Determine the market access conditions for their chosen
market;Decide on a market entry strategy; andPrepare an export sales and marketing plan.

This
course helps prospective exporters understand the opportunities and challenges
of intra-African trade. Only 16% of Africa's total exports are with other
African countries. The course explains why this is the case, both at a
continental level as well as at the enterprise level, and introduces some of
reasons and means which African SMEs might deploy to start profitably trading
in the continent. Particular focus is placed on the African Continental Free
Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) which provides new opportunities to increase
intra-African trade in the form of easier access to African markets.

After
having completed this course, participants will be able to:

Assess the potential of intra-African exports;Identify measures and initiatives designed to provide
support to African exporters;Assess the readiness of their business to take advantage
of intra-African trade; andStart planning to engage in intra-African exports.
