Sustainable Development Goals

This project contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals, as defined by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The project aims to respond to the COVID crisis and the recent increase in demand for e-commerce due to the lockdowns in most MENA countries and the social distancing requirements that should last longer than the lockdowns. Retail businesses are struggling to find a way to reach customers and retain sales during this crisis.

The project will aim to support this challenge by offering women-led SMEs in MENA an opportunity to learn, in English, French and Arabic, about the fundamentals of doing business via e-commerce, managing logistics and utilizing digital marketing channels. These e-learnings will be delivered through a short series of webinars and facilitated, interactive online deep dive clinics.

Women economic empowerment in the handicraft sector.

The International Trade Centre’s flagship initiative on women and trade, SheTrades, has launched a new chapter in Egypt to empower and boost the competitiveness of women-owned micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the handicraft sector.

The project’s overarching objective is women’s economic empowerment as part of the country’s inclusive and sustainable development and economic growth.

The project will provide women-led small businesses with trainings on production, packaging, logistics, trade information, quality management, and sector-specific marketing and sales.

Fifty targeted women-owned small businesses will benefit from adopting best export practices and connecting with export markets and buyers, translating into increased resources and growth of their businesses.

To ensure strong support for women entrepreneurs entering new markets, the project will also provide advisory services, trainings and technical guidance to the Export Development Authority of Egypt and selected trade support institutions to establish more effective trade institutional frameworks for women-owned businesses.

SheTrades Egypt will:

 • Train trade support institutions on gender and how to mainstream gender in their institutions
 • Help institutions understand the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs and how to build up their capacity to trade
 • Provide support on trade information services, market development and quality management
 • Advise buyers on how to better engage with women entrepreneurs, providing online and offline training, best practices and helping them commit to sourcing goods and services from participating women entrepreneurs
 • Support select trade institutions who take a lead role in mobilizing buyers and ensure effective business-to-business links

Statistics show that only 1/5 Egyptian companies in the handicraft sector are women-owned exporters. ITFC is therefore very proud to support the She Trades Egypt project.

ITC’s Global Textiles and Clothing Programme (GTEX) in Egypt works to create jobs and increase the income of micro small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the textile and clothing industry.

We work directly with 35 enterprises in denim, knitwear, sports and leisurewear to diversify their exports and increase their international competitiveness by linking them to new markets and buyers, as well as financing mechanisms so they can expand their production.

Strengthening the sector and boosting exports will have an enormous impact as the industry employs an estimated one million people in Egypt, largely informally.

We provide training, coaching and mentoring in lean management, material sourcing, product design and development, export marketing and branding, and digital upgrading. We support mentoring between larger ‘champion’ companies and smaller companies and assist several business support organizations (BSOs).

We also work to improve social and environmental industry standards and provide support to improve overall dyeing and finishing processes.

Changing lives in the textile and clothing sector
Changing lives in the textile and clothing sector

Egypt’s clothing sector was badly hit by the COVID-19 economic upheaval. To support the Egyptian textile and clothing industry, ITC through GTEX/MENATEX helped companies pivot into digital processes, increase their online presence, and remodel their traditional production lines into personal protective equipment and face masks.

We created a video library of webinars on topics such as market access, environmental management, trade finance, and digitalization that is available to all the project’s stakeholders and national partners.

ITC also provided an impact study on the COVID-19 crisis, giving stakeholders updated information on the pandemic’s impact on the sector, including employment rates, the number of MSMEs affected, the loss of buyers, and new opportunities in unconventional markets and products.
