About WACOMP Guinea

As an implementing partner of the WACOMP Guinea programme, the International Trade Centre (ITC) is working to revive Guinea’s pineapple sector by facilitating access to international markets. Areas that need improving are production and processing and conforming to international norms and standards.

ITC supports pineapple farmers and exporters by:

 • Identifying market opportunities for Guinean pineapples

 • Developing and supporting the implementation of a marketing plan for the promotion of Guinean pineapples

 • Accompanying and monitoring ITC clients as they seek to enter new export markets

 • Creating links with target markets, including through international trade fairs, B2B buyer/seller meetings, market orientation visits and training on best practices.

Guinea's pineapple sector

Pineapple accounts for roughly 20% of the world's tropical fruit production and is the second most cultivated exotic fruit after banana. World pineapple production has doubled over the last 25 years to more than 25.4 million tons per year.

Guinea produces several varieties of pineapple: the smooth Cayenne, Baronne de Rothschild and Queen. Among the local varieties, the Baronne de Rothschild is known for its thorny leaves, its excellent quality and short storage period, best for niche markets and export by air. The smooth Cayenne, on the other hand, is the primary variety cultivated in Guinea, and has a long shelf life, so it can be transported by sea.

The International Trade Centre (ITC) is working on facilitating access to the international market for Guinean pineapple with the aim of reviving the sector.

Context

Expanding West African trade

The goal of the International Trade Centre (ITC)’s West African Competitiveness Programme, or WACOMP, is to increase regional integration through trade. To that end, we focus on promoting conducive business environments and greater participation of the private sector in a public-private dialogue on trade policy.

In the regional programme we concentrate on improving micro, small and medium-sized enterprises’ (MSMEs) access to secure investments and improving their regional reach. We also work to advance production and processing in the agro-food industry.

To improve business performance and value chain connectivity, we are reinforcing national Trade and Investment Support Institutions as well as supporting the ECOWAS Trade Promotion Organisations Network to share best practices and insights.

Business tools

We are expanding the use of ITC technological tools to gather comprehensive information in the region. The Trade Obstacles Alert Mechanism (TOAM) identifies existing trade obstacles to ensure the regional flow of trade improves once these obstacles are addressed.

ITC has also embedded the ECOWAS trade map tool (ECOTIS) in the ECOWAS Commission’s website to assist with tracking trade performance and capitalize on potential trade opportunities in the region.

The first training session was a mind-opener to the growth opportunities that exist in other African markets. My team looks forward to learning more on how we can build resilience as we scale up.

Above all, the trainings have enabled us to see our strategies from a new angle, consider export possibilities, and to think about different scenarios. Today, with our selection, which my team and I are very proud of, we hope that the tools that will be made available to us will enable us to further strengthen our strategy and be able to sell in the sub-regional market.

Through the WACOMP trainings, we discovered insidious actions that we were carrying out without much attention. This has led us to review our commercial approaches. I appreciate the open-mindedness of the facilitators and participants as well.

This project aims to address economic and development challenges faced by Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea by rebuilding and reinforcing the productive and trade capacities across the cocoa and cocoa derivatives value chain. It will enable smallholder producers to improve post-harvest efficiency, connect better to markets, add value to increase their competitiveness and comply with standards. Following a step-by-step approach, interventions first focused on Sierra Leone, building on and consolidating activities started under a bridge project launched in Q2 2017 leading to the present NTF IV Mano River Cocoa project. Forging the technical and professional skills of young Guineans

ITC’s Support Programme for the Socio-Economic Integration of Youth (INTEGRA) aims to prevent and limit irregular migration by providing young Guineans and returning migrants with essential job skills.

We do this through a range of trainings in youth entrepreneurship, agribusiness, food quality and safety, market profiling, and tech skills. Our approach is learning-by-doing and includes practical sessions for trainees.

We also provide financial management consultants to work with our young entrepreneurs, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives to help improve their credit profile, provide advice on business plans, and identify sources of financing .

Our financial advisors have supported more than 900 aspiring entrepreneurs and 40 MSMEs and cooperatives.

We also work with Guinea’s industries to help them better serve the country’s private sector.

While multi-dimensional poverty remains high in sub-Saharan Africa, the continent's high growth rates and youthful demographics make it an attractive investment destination. Big opportunities exist to create jobs, boost incomes and reduce poverty by connecting African small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to international trade and increasing local value addition to Africa’s assets in agrifood, manufacturing and services. ITC’s emphasis on digital connectivity and the green transition is helping transform digital landscapes across Sub Saharan Africa with our support to tech startups and tech hubs.
