Ethiopia’s First Lady, Roman Tesfaye, called on the Executive Director of the International Trade Centre, Arancha González, on 1 May 2014 during its 50th anniversary. They discussed ways to to boost women’s economic empowerment in Ethiopia. Ms Tesfaye, the wife of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, has championed women’s integration into the Ethiopian economy and society through her ‘Connecting 1500 Women and Young Girls to the Export Market’ project.

Ms González thanked the First Lady for visiting the ITC on the date marking the 50th year of existence of the organization. She added that tapping into women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can help reduce poverty since they re-invest up to 90 per cent of their revenues in their families and communities.

ITC is currently working with the Centre for Accelerated Women’s Economic Empowerment (CAWEE) in Ethiopia to support women in the textile and garment sectors.
